Fair warning: incoherent blathering, movie spoilers and the Oscars.
I had a baby Oscar party at my house yesterday. I want to thank both of my my sweeties,
loracs (yes she has succumbed to the dark side :-) and
serenejournal for all the work they did putting the party together. We ate heaps of hotdogs, nachos, popcorn and movie candy including: popcorn flavored Mike and Ike, Boston Baked Beans, Sweetarts, Skittles, Hershey's chocolate (my personal fav), and Gummi Hotdogs.
Along with the super hostesses other attendee's were
alanbostick, Betty,
sogwife,
wild_irises, and
wordweaverlynn. I managed to be a bit insensitive to one guest and I worried about another (what, me worry?) but I think people had fun. I certainly did. Despite my grumblings.
Generally, I thought the Oscar presentation went remarkably well. The changes made sped things up and yet gave the nominees and winners a bit of the spotlight. It wasn't Chris Rock's finest hour, but he didn't screw it up either. I loved the interviews at a Magic Johnson's movie theater. Hated the song nominations as usual. Although, I love whatever Counting Crows does and listening to Carlos Santana can never be bad.
Now we come to the more problematic, for me, part of the evening. I'm not going to be particularly coherent about this. Maybe someday I will manage to but not now. I'm furious about Clint Eastwood winning a Best Director Oscar for Million Dollar Baby. Along with the added insult of The Sea Inside winning the best foreign film.
Maybe if there had been only one movie about helping a person with a disability kill themselves. I could look at it more objectively. Maybe if anyone but Clint Eastwood (Who has made a mission of attacking the Americans with Disabilities Act) had directed it. Maybe if Million Dollar Baby had any of relation to how we handle disability in this country.
Now I'm completely able to believe that many people with disabilities don't get the services they need, but how am I supposed accept Eastwood's world presented in the movie? Where do you find a "top-notch" rehabilitation center where there is apparently no rehabilitation going on and not one other person with a disability there besides our "heroine"?
It scares me that after all this time the same argument made years ago to start an earlier genocide is not only being accepted but awarded.
