Movies
Corpse Bride and Serenity
Movies seen recently: Corpse Bride was not one of Tim Burton's best attempts. Generally, I love his stuff but this one was a musical and Danny Elfman fell down on the job in the music department. One song is halfway all right, the song sung by "Bone"jangles. The film was visually interesting. I don't think Tim could do a movie that wasn't visually interesting, but no story. No interesting characters. Not a good movie in my opinion.
Serenity. I don't think I have had as much fun watching a movie in years. Pure unadulterated fun. I'm buying the DVD when it comes out. I'll see the sequal or prequel or whatever when it comes out and I'll probably buy their DVD's as well. I could write a great deal about this movie, but I don't really have the energy. Here are a few thoughts.
I loved the furter explanation of the origin of the Reavers! I've never been comfortable with the origin given in a series. It felt unrealistic and simplistic. There being an artificial chemical reason for their existence helped me feel like they were more than just the "boogy men" of the series.
I'm really unhappy that Shepherd Book is gone. I'm not really happy with either death, but I was really looking forward to getting the shepherd's back story. I also really like Ron Glass and enjoyed seeing him working again.
I intend to see the movie again, but I got the impression that the movie abandoned the "no noise in space" that was honored in the series. I could be the noise was from the perspective of people inside the ship when the ship was being pummeled. I hope that's true, but it seemed like the explosion's in space for making noise. I loved the silent explosions much more dramatic without noise. Now I'll have to go back and see what you all thought of the movies.
