A recent post in [personal profile] serenejournal's journal reminded me of a favorite school story of mine. It's not a great story to tell because I don't remember enough of the details to make it significant for anyone else. I'm posting it here as a .

It was in my introduction to theater course my first year at UC Berkeley. I was starting to think that I didn't have whatever it took to understand modern theater. We were discussing Rockabye by Samuel Beckett. I was completely lost. When Dunbar Ogden, my teacher, asked me a question about the play. I really wish I remembered all the questions he asked me that day. Each question built on the next. Some of the early answers I struggled with, but as I answered each question it got easier. Until all of the connections with language and staging and all of it made sense. I went into class that day having no clue what the play meant. I left that class understanding it and a lot of what Beckett was doing in his weird little plays. He's still one of my favor playwrights.
