I'm not a very good LJ'er these days. When I have things to say, I don't seem to have the energy and when I have the energy, I can't think of anything interesting to say.

I've been watching the second season's of Dead Like Me and Farscape on DVD. I just finished Dead Like Me. I sort of liked the first season at least enough to look at the second. I'm not sure I'm particularly happy with their version of the afterlife. The show is centered around a group of "Reapers" as in Grim Reapers. Who are the folks makes sure your soul moves on the proper place after you die.

Now they try to collect your soul just before your staff so that the dying person doesn't have to suffer the actual pain of death. They find their charges with only the information they receive on a yellow post it. That only gives the first initial and last name of the potentially deceased along with the place they are to die and the ETD or estimated time of death. What is kind of interesting about the show is that except that Reapers can't be killed and they collect souls, they don't have any other particular powers. They don't have to eat, sleep, or drink but they like to. They don't have any place to stay so they have to get jobs or find some other way to get money, find a place to live etc.

In the first season none of the characters are very likable. None of them are really very nice. Yet I found myself liking them in spite of themselves. Now I will confess that Mandy Patinkin is largely responsible for my continuing to watch this show but the other characters grow on you.

The second season gets decidedly darker, but I got to say I really enjoyed watching these mostly unrepentant, grouchy, self-involved folk. You don't see characters like this on TV very much. Anyway I'm having great fun watching them.

My husband [livejournal.com profile] sinanju loves Dead Like Me. I watched a few, and while I marveled at the nonsensical version of the afterlife (why do they need to eat? Why do all those apartments and homes stay empty long enough for them to live in them?) I didn't care enough about the characters to keep watching.

Well, if you don't care for the characters there isn't much point in continuing to watching it.

yeah, where you bean?

most of my LJ efforts are in reading other people's stuff, and trying to follow the myriad of doggie groups I've joined. I did post on petbulls a picture of my two maniacs.

I've been around doing nothing particularly worth journaling about. Writing some, reading some, having fun Friday's and Saturday's. Working on getting review copies for the Tiptree Award. Going to ERC meetings. Watching DVDs and catching a few movies. Saw Mission Impossible 3 which was good but I really wish they'd stop calling them Mission Impossible movies. They are so not what the TV show was about.

Ha! To be fair, I was more than a little bit like that myself.
