A request for a recommendation

Our baby Doberman, Gilly, has something going on with a tooth and we think we may need to take her to the veterinarian. Normally. That would mean a trip to see Dr. Hack in El Cerrito. We go that far because we really like the clinic and when [personal profile] loracs only worked four days a week it was easy to go there on a weekday during work hours (well, other peoples work hours). Now that [personal profile] loracs's new job is a 8:30 to 5:00, five days a week sort of thing. It is no longer possible to go there. So we're looking for a good Vet closer to San Leandro (preferably in San Leandro but depending on circumstances maybe Oakland). Does anybody have any good suggestions?

Our baby Doberman, Gilly,

I can't resist asking....is that a Dobie Gillis reference? Or am I reaching?

You are not reaching at all. When we got her we intended to call her Gillis, but that rapidly devolved to Gilly.

Hi! I'm here by way of [livejournal.com profile] firecat, who thought I might have a suggestion for you. She is right. :)

First, there's a major vet hospital in San Leandro, but unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it. I'm sure you could find it in the phone book, though.

Other vets I know of are in Oakland. I haven't been to all of these, but I'll add comments under those I have been to.

Broadway Pet Hospital (4920 Broadway, Oakland)- 510-653-0212

I've gone here many times. They're very thorough and have all the latest high-tech gizmos. I trust them to find a problem and treat it successfully, but a word of warning: they are very pricey. And they sometimes do tests and/or treatments that aren't really necessary, or they try to convince you that your pet needs it, when they may not. So beware of that.

On the other hand, they were the third vet I took my cat to (with an infected eye), and were the only ones to find out what was causing it and give her the proper treatment. It's a very difficult, almost intractable infection, and so far the cost has been between $1200-1500!! (This includes a week-long stay when I needed to go out of town on business in the middle of her treatment.)

Bay Area Vet Specialist - 483-7387

(No info.)

Lake Veterinary Clinic (3331 Grand Ave, Oakland) - 510-452-1255

I went here once - didn't like them. They took my cat in back to give her an X-ray, and I heard her screeching loudly like she was in a lot of pain. When I asked at the front desk about that, the tech went back to find out, and then came back and told me, "That wasn't your cat making all that noise." But then later, when the vet brought my cat back to me, she said, "Wow, your kitty sure was a loud complainer! But she's OK." Now why did they lie at first??

In fairness, I have a good friend who has always brought her dogs there and she loves them. She has always found them very reasonable and they're understanding about cost, and they tend to take a conservative approach to testing and treatment. So maybe my weird experience was just an isolated one, but it creeped me out so I haven't been back.

Oakland Vet Hospital (4258 MacArthur, Oakland) - 510-530-1353

I've been there a few times. They were completely unable to do anything for my cat's infected eye (they were the first of the three I mentioned above). But they would be fine for very routine things, I think.

VCA Bay Area Animal Hospital (4820 Broadway, Oakland) - 510-654-8375

Never been to this place.

Montclair Vet (Mountain Blvd, Oakland) - 510-339-8600

These folks were pretty good. I had to rush a cat there after she had been rescued from a neighbor's garage, where she'd been trapped for a week, and had gone without food or water (or at least, not enough of either). I had never gone to this place before, but after frantic calls to all the vets in the area, this was the first place that had an opening, so I didn't ask questions. They were very understanding, checked her out thoroughly, and sent her home with a bag of sub-q fluids and reasonable advice/treatment, which amounted to "Keep her indoors for at least a few days, feed her, and give her the subq fluids every day".

Hope you find a good vet!

Well, thanks for all the info! This ought to help us find a good Vet.

Park Centre Veterinary in Alameda is open weekends and they really love animals.

(510)521-1700

They're a block off Park Street, but I don't have the address handy (the phone number I have memorized; they're the only vet we've used in many years, except once when we had to take a kitty to the emergency 24-hour vet). Plus, they have parking.

Thanks for the recommendation, Dan'l!
