*sigh*

As of this very minute, my computer is back! Last Thursday (Thanksgiving for us USAns) I killed my computer while trying to install an upgrade to my Norton Utilities.

I had to hire a computer geek to fix it. Which basically entailed reinstalling Windows again. I have no idea why I can always find three copies of previous versions of software that I don't need at all anymore. Yet can't find the drivers disk for the computer I use every day. Has anyone started using Internet Explorer 7?

With the able assistance of [personal profile] serenejournal and [personal profile] loracs I managed to get most of my software installed. Except for Asheron's Call and a critical Windows upgrade called service pack 2 or something close to that. For some reason Asheron's Call wouldn't install. It just kept telling me I needed to upgrade and directing me to Windows update. I was guessing that the critical update had something that my game needed. So I started looking at other ways to install the critical update. I found the instructions on alternative ways to get it installed. I couldn't get any of them to work. Meanwhile, I became very disenchanted with Internet Explorer 7. So I decided to go back to 6.

Once I was back to 6 I tried one more time out of pure stubbornness to install my game and by golly it installed no problem. Now I still don't have the critical update installed and I'm a little worried about that but all my old software is working. I can't believe how much work it was to get everything back up. So here I am back online.

Welcome back! What a pain going through all that, but I think we've all been there at one time or another.

I installed IE7 on my laptop but really just use it to test things now and then -- not as my regular browser. It annoys me because you can't customize it as much as IE6, at least in terms of there being an annoying bar taking up screen space that you can't get rid of even if you delete all the icons from it.

I have IE7 installed at work, but I don't really use it per se -- I mostly use Firefox.

WinXP Service Pack 2 is an incredibly important update to apply, though. I hope you can find a way to get it going. There's probably a standalone installer you can download, which you might have better luck with.

*nods* I get that it's important. I had tried everything that I could think of to get it installed. I didn't realize there might be a standalone installer. On your suggestion, I went looking and found one. It didn't install on the first try either but I finally got it to install after much blood, sweat, and tears. *relief*

It's an example of when my stubbornness is a feature! :-)
