I would like to add that the toll of death and misery currently being sown by Republican greed and the specific refusal to face scientific facts about climate change will likely extend well beyond our individual lifespans and beyond our own species.
Decades ago, I remember reading a science fiction short story where some form of time manipulation brought back an artifact that suggested that evolved and aspirant cockroaches would inherit the earth. At the time the story was written, I think the idea was that humanity would destroy itself via nuclear war. We may or may not have dodged that bullet. But addiction to economic growth and petrochemicals may be just as deadly, with the longer projected duration of the crisis giving scope for a much more extended period of suffering.
I still love what's best in humanity. But it's looking like a poorer and poorer bet that enough of our species will become truly wise enough and responsible enough to do what's needed to ensure our long-term survival.

Maybe the cockroaches will do a better job.
