A few months ago we received a letter from our neighbor asking if we might be interested in annexing a piece of their property to ours. We live in a neighborhood that has some houses with pretty small lots next to houses with mondo big lots. Our neighbor was selling their house with a big lot that had also bought a piece of another neighbor's lot years ago. They apparently thought selling the small piece of property separate from the main house would be a good idea. The way the lot is situated there are only three houses that really could take advantage of the property and ours gets the best benefit because it extended our backyard straight back 50 feet. The two other houses that might benefit from the property would basically get an L-shaped lot out of it.

Anyway, the other neighbors weren't interested and we made an offer on the property and got it a couple of weeks ago. Two days ago we were able to knock down the fence at the back of our house to actually see the property for the first time. We observed and were told that there were bunches of trees. We were completely sure what trees, but a Fuji Apple tree was rumored to be on the property. Fuji is my favorite Apple and apples are my favorite fruit. I'm very pleased to report that we are now the proud owners of a Fuji Apple tree. We also have a couple fig trees to add to the one we already have. Another plum tree, several grapevines, too dead trees and three or four other trees we haven't identified yet.

Any suggestions for good web sites to help me identify the remaining trees would be appreciated. I am no gardener, so lots of pictures and the ability to browse will help. Also if there are any web sites for a very very novice gardener specifically around good care and feeding of fruit trees would also be appreciated.

If I can get [personal profile] loracs to take pictures I'll post a few of the yard soon. I spent a good deal of time yesterday listening to my iPod in the shade of the new fig trees. Life is good.

I've been thinking I should take some pictures before we remove anything. Great minds think alike!

That's great. We have an L-shaped yard and the neighbor basically has none. It is sooo not for sale though. Your new space sounds great. I really miss having fruit trees.

Ooh, yay fruit trees! Sounds like a splendid acquisition!

(I have no help to offer on the identification question, alas.)

How wonderful!

And I suspect our new rentalmay be relatively accessible via driveway, patio, and patio doors.

That sounds terrific. Now are you lined up for the pruning? I think apple trees crop better with regular pruning.
