My Birthday

My birthday actually started on the 20th.
serenejournal invited
tenacious_snail and
inflectionpoint over for her toffee. They brought some cheese. My stomach wasn't being particularly cooperative. So I only tried a bite or two of the toffee. I did eat some of cheese. I really liked the goat cheese cured in red wine, very tasty. We sat around munching and talking for a couple hours and then they left. The two of them are very sweet with each other. Once they had gone,
serenejournal and I got a little time together. We watched Serenity. Which I had already seen and we both loved it. Yes, there are a couple plot points that bother me, but ultimately its a rollicking good time. Almost as good a time as I had before we watched the movie. :-).
Later my sister,
tracytreefrog came to visit and
loracs got home.
serenejournal cooked up some corned beef and cabbage we had in the house. I'm not a fan of corned beef and cabbage. So I finished off some quiche she had made for lunch. For dessert we had lemon curd pie. Made with lemon curd which was made from lemons picked from my very own lemon tree! :-)
serenejournal had assured me that I would love the lemon curd. I was dubious but it turned out really good. We all sat around and talked. I'm in the throes preparing for the big book organizing day we're having at my house on Saturday. I've finally accepted the fact that I really just can't read paperbacks anymore. I can't figure out a system to easily hold them open while I read them. So I am unloading lots of paperbacks before people come over to put my books alphabetical order for me. So Sis grabbed a few books she was interested in and headed home early. She had to be at work by 6:00 AM the next day. It was a lot of socializing from me. Pleasant socializing I'm surprised to say, but more than I'm usually comfortable with.
On my actual birthday,
loracs and I spent a good portion of the day being lazy. We watched Meet Joe Black on television. The movie had a promising beginning but book forever to end! We eventually got out of the house around 2:00. I had some credit at Black Oak Books that I was spoiling to fritter away. Besides, I really want to buy hardcover copies of some old favorites. I found hardcover copies of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, Philip Jose Farmer's To Your Scattered Bodies Go, Greg Bear's, Tangents and a couple other books I can't remember and I'm too lazy to go find out. We had our lunch/dinner at Saul's Restaurant and Deli in Berkeley. Being a native Californian, and never living any further east than Illinois, I know I don't know what a "real" Jewish deli is a man do I love Saul's. It is my favorite Jewish deli. I got some brisket with a side of chopped liver and a latke.
loracs had a brisket and pastrami sandwich. It was all so good. We went home after that and watched the Disney version of Around the World in 80 Days with Jackie Chan. Except for some very short fight scenes that were fun. The movie was amazingly bad.
After a little noodling on the computer we went to bed and I had an even nicer time. Not bad for a 48-year-old man.
