Last week was pretty good. I got to see [personal profile] serenejournal on her birthday in San Francisco after her unpleasant job interview experience. She was still recovering from stomach difficulties but we had lunch at the San Francisco Center. I got to show her The Special Place (tm) and I think she returned home feeling a little better. Thursday we had her birthday dinner at our house. [personal profile] serenejournal made the most incredible clam chowder and humongous sandwiches. I got to meet [personal profile] intenselaura who is much cuter than any of her pictures. She's also comfortable to be around in a quiet way. I'm glad we finally got to meet face-to-face. Carol, Betty, [personal profile] wild_irises and [personal profile] someotherguy were also in attendance and we all had our best material. Lots of laughter and warmth and good times. We missed [profile] sogwife, who was helping her mother. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I certainly did.

Saturday, I went to Bayfair and saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. which was just beautiful. It perhaps depends a little too much on its look to maintain audience interest but I still had a good time. It's best not to think about the plot too much. It doesn't completely hang together but then in the tradition of old movie serials, that works. Jude Law was a bit stiff in my opinion, but again it may have been intentional (not a particularly interesting acting choice, but there you go). Angelina Jolie can do no wrong in my eyes and Gwyneth Paltrow did a fine job. Something that made me feel odd but apparently doesn't bother anyone else is the use of Laurence Olivier's image with stock footage as a character in the movie. It's the first time I can remember such a thing happening. It feels ... nonconsensual.

[personal profile] serenejournal and I spent our usual Saturday on Sunday. After one of my better morning's :-) we were mostly lumps all-day. Watched some of the new television season that I had taped during the week. Saw Lost (which is my favorite new show of the season so far), Veronica Mars (which I didn't like very much, but want to give at least another chance to) CSI: NY (actually, I saw this one earlier in the week and didn't recommend it to [personal profile] serenejournal. The first episode pushed all kinds of buttons with me and I am not sure I'll be watching it. I haven't regularly watched any of the CSI shows, but the New York show is very dark.), and Will & Grace.

[personal profile] serenejournal had told me that on her first date with [personal profile] intenselaura they had seen Shaun of the Dead. I had been on the fence around seeing it, but she said it was very funny. So Carol, [personal profile] serenejournal and I decided to catch it at Bayfair. I did, mostly, enjoy it. You do have to come to the movie with the right mindset however. The first half (up until they get to the Winchester) was more funny/interesting than the latter half (except for the very end). All I have to say is [personal profile] serenejournal and [personal profile] intenselaura are very, very sick women, but aren't they the best kind? :-)
