As I posted before, "Nabbed from
serenejournal but I've seen it all over. 'Because I'm frustrated by seeing the answers and not the questions in other people's entries, I'm going to change it for myself. Ask me anything. I will reveal the questions and answers, but not who you are. I will answer every question asked of me, even if the answer is, 'that's something I don't want to talk about.'"

More questions are always welcome, but in this go round I just have one so far.
If you could have authored any book written what book would it be and why?
[May 3 Edit: if a comment is visible, I got an okay from the author]
Anyone who knows me would guess that I would pick a Robert Heinlein novel. He did have an inordinate amount of influence on my growing up. The first story I ever read that had a person like me in it. Who actually got out into space was in a Heinlein story, "Waldo". I see many of Heinlein's faults and he had many. He was definitely a man of his time trying to expand our notions of race and gender. Yes, he did it badly but he tried. That's better than many male writers of his time in his chosen genre did.
Anyway, in an attempt to avoid the traditional "Heinlein is god/devil" rant let me try to answer the question. I have limited myself to novels and avoided plays. I might change my answer if all literature was being included. Sticking to novels, I think I would like to have written J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.
I have a few reasons for this choice. The main one is it'a helluva good book. It's the first book I was required to read for school that really spoke to me. I'm no Holden but there was a time in my life where he made a great deal sense to me. His frustration with "phoney" adults. His desire to be different and yet fear of the very same thing. A damaged boy trying to find his way.
I like the idea of writing a book that stirs such controversy even today. It's regularly on the lists of books that have been or "should be" censored. Anything that controversial has to have something important in it IMHO.
I like the mystery surrounding its author. I would like to produce a work of art that speaks for itself and doesn't reflect on me as a person. It feels selfless to me. Sometimes I would like to get away from my own ego. It would feel good knowing I had produced something of beauty and put it out into the world just for itself.
