Civil diso-B-dience: Plan B contraception for teenagers

http://othermag.org/blog/?p=75

Lorraine, on Culture Kitchen, has offered to provide Plan B for people who
can't get it:

So, here's the deal. I am making a pledge, which I fully
intend to keep. If you need Plan B contraception, and you contact me, I
will go to my local pharmacy and get it for you. Your parents don't have
to know.

The CWFA will likely lobby Congress for a bill that will make my
activities illegal, but I do not give a rat's ass for what the CWFA thinks
of me.

This is an act of civil disobedience.

I'd like to add myself to that pledge. And I call on the entire feminist
blogosphere to consider pledging the same thing. It's a big job, but
somebody's got to do it.

Me, too, also.

Since the new FDA rules for selling Plan B require that the woman involved present ID as proof of age, it will be interesting to see whether pharmacists will sell it to men at all.

But, yeah, me, too. Even though any sane pharmacist would take one look at me and realize I'm old enough to be past the age where pregnancy is an issue.

Well, if I can't. I can't, but if I can. I will.

You've also got enough women in your life who would be willing and able to assist you with any request that comes your way. It's not "just" an act of civil disobedience. It's also an act that could save a life, or at the very least the quality of life, for someone in need. Even if you can't get a prescription filled in your name, I could see that being a public contact might become an invaluable role. Not everyone willing to help will also be either willing or able to go public.

Protecting a woman's right to choose could, by necessity, become an underground activity, a conspiracy if you will. Knowing someone who knows someone might just become the most direct route possible.

Unfortunately, I could see pregnancy being a relevant issue long after a body's ability to conceive is over. A truly sane pharmacist might take one look and realize it's in everyone's best interests to not take a second look.

In a sane world pregnancy would be a personal issue. In my opinion reproductive rights have not been a sane issue at anytime during most of my life.
