My spouse, [personal profile] serenejournal thought folks might enjoy the pic behind the cut. A little backround: Carol, my live-in spouse, is an enthusiastic fan of <&omega>mas decorating (the "<&omega>" is deliberate there's no Christ connected to our holiday!) For those of you who haven't had the pleasure you should see our house on the holidays. No, really you should! Just to say you did and survived with some of your sanity. If I get this image posting thing figured out, I'll post some samples of this year's <&omega>mas house.

Anyway, along with house decorating Carol makes and sends out Xmas cards starring our current dog. They used to be called Klipper cards named for my service dog. Now that Klipper is romping through the happy hunting grounds (or more likely, napping). They are now Gilly Greetings after my baby Dobie.

Let's see if this

[Edited to replace the "X"'s in Xmas with "<&omega>" as suggested by [personal profile] xiphias to embrace the variability]

Unfortunately, the "X" thing doesn't remove Christ from it, as it's actually a symbol if the guy. I've always seen "Xmas" as MORE blatantly having a symbol of Jesus in the word than "Christmas". The "X" is actually a Greek letter, capital Χ, first letter of Χριστοσ.

You could celebrate Yuletide, though, which doesn't have any necessarily Christian references in it. . .

Thanks for the information.

more variability

True. Though the Greek letter is "X", and not "x" (I don't think I have the greek alphabet set easily available, so I can't adequately represent the smaller case Greek X, which is far more "calligraphic" than our modern typeface). "x" of course is most commonly used for mathematical formulae requiring a variable. So I suppose if one just fails to ever capitalize the letter it might become a subtle way of being inclusive to the variability of the holidays celebrated at this time of year. Ignore the meaning of "-mas" as "a Catholic Mass" in favor of the Spanish meaning "more" and the whole thing becomes a celebration of more variability! ;^)

Heh. I like this theory.

By the way, in HTML, Greek is easy -- just &[name of greek letter]; -- like Χ for Χ and χ for χ

I think maybe you could use Omega! And you could celebrate Ωmas!

Humm I was going to edit the post but I can't get the & thing to give me the greek letter.

I'm seeing a lowercase omega where you want one. What browser are you using?

Really? I still don't see it. I use Microsoft Explorer.

That might explain it. Explorer is about the worst recent browser out there for HTML 4.0 compatibility.
