Now this Is so cool! Thanks [personal profile] aquaeri for the link. I just wish they showed the wheelchair user pushing their own chair a little more

Unfortunately it wasn't clear to me whether you really could push from the wheelchair. The wheels are very wide, metal and flexible. I don't know how practical they would be to push. I think in so far as the design needs improvement, that's an important area.

One of the things I thought was really cool watching the show, was that as a side effect of making the wheelchair deal with sand and water, is that it also manages to take at least shallow steps. The wheels deform and reshape, and it must be a bit like riding a tank.

I thought I saw one wheelchair user grabbing the rim of the wheel in a way that looked like he could push himslf. Although the wheels are wide they aren't thick. So it looked possible. If you can't push the wheelchair yourself, it isn't as cool as I thought. IMHO

I don't think there's any IMHO about it, it isn't as cool. But it's always easier to modify and improve stuff once the idea is out there, so here's hoping for the all-terrain self-propelled beach wheelchair soon :-).
