1. Describe the protagonist and antagonist in your science fiction novel, if you were to write it today.

Stone (working name) was born without working legs. They are stunted and can barely hold his weight. He was almost killed at birth because of them, but his grandmother who held a great deal of power in his tribe saved him. He was mostly ostracized throughout his life. He is quick and clever. He is pretty disassociated from everyone but his grandmother and his dog. He makes a living by going from town to town doing street shows of magic and juggling.

My antagonist keeps changing his name but he is a member of the priesthood and main adviser to the King. He is remarkably tall and beautiful. His looks help him, but he dislikes the attention they bring to him. He would much rather control things from the shadows. He is after Stone because he sees him as a destabilizing influence on his culture.

2. Who is the most interesting roommate you've ever had, excluding your current housemates?

Perhaps Marvin, he was of the Baha'i faith. He was the first person I knew well who was not either an atheist, Jewish or a member of mainstream Christian Church. At the time I was agnostic and we used to have long conversations about the nature of god and religion. He also introduced me to a lot of disability culture.

3. Let's say I'm gonna make you any meal you want. What would it be?

Probably something with peanut sauce, crab cakes and chocolate something for dessert. Oh and to create the proper ambience, I'd need to have it served naked of course!

4. Who is your most steadfast, reliable friend (sweeties don't count)? Tell a few good things about that person.

Debbie Notkin, who is somewhere between family, best friend, sweetie. Debbie is remarkably smart and kind and filled with integrity. I admire her ability to work through hard things rather than to avoid them. She even seeks out difficult experiences if she thinks they are useful or would be helpful to her. She is really good at reminding people of the things they are good at or the good work they have done. Every recovering Catholic should have someone like her in their lives.

5. You get to be anyone else, living or dead, for a week. Who, why, and what will you do?

This is way too hard. I would probably pick Neil Armstrong and go to the moon. Why? Because he went to the MOON! Other possibilities: Jimi Hendrix. I'd love to play guitar at Monterey Pop Festival. One of the Mitchell Brothers way before one shot the other. The opportunity for that much sex would be hard to say no to. Jack Nicholson, while he was filming Chinatown. Anton Chekov in the early days of the Moscow Art Theater.

In which case, probably not ... next year?

i sure hope so!! if it's a conflict with my spring concert, the way it always had been before, i'm going to have a really difficult decision on my hands.

I know the problem ... I wasn't sure I was going to make it this year as I knew I had an exam somewhere around the time of the convention. PK had already booked the flights by the time the date was handed out ... it turned out to be the day before we set out. Which, as I said, was better than the day after, but god, that was close. Next year I don't have the same dilemma, but after that, I'm not sure ...

Yes, but only briefly. The combination of the heat and the smell from the popcorn maker across the corridor drove me out to another party further along the row.
