Jun. 5th, 2003 06:08 pmIt's my turn at "the shower meme".
klwalton graciously accepted my request to interview me. Now I get to post her questions and my answers in my Live Journal. If you want me to interview you. (by basically writing up five questions designed specifically for you). All you have to do is ask me to interview you in my comments. Then you post my questions to your journal with your answers and make the same offer to others. Does that make sense?
1. Since I don't know you as well as I'd like, give me some background. What is your profession and what led you to it?
Most of my income comes from federal and state disability benefits. I tell people I am a writer. I have actually been paid for my writing, but I don't make a substantial living at it yet. There are several reasons why I write. It is something that I can do without much assistance. Most other things require me to get help in one way or another. Writing is an activity I can do completely on my own. I am a communicator and advocate. Writing is a way that I can do both. I don't particularly enjoy the act of writing, but I love having written something that I like.
2. If it isn't too personal a question, what is your disability?
I appreciate that you know it is a personal question. Often folk ask me that like they're asking me my hair color. I have a neural muscular disability which makes me weak. It is one of the disabling conditions covered by the Muscular Dystrophy association although it is not Muscular Dystrophy. I have complete sensation over my entire body. I can even move all of my limbs, I just can't move them enough to overcome gravity. I don't give out my specific diagnosis. Partly as a political act, it's no one's business and partly because giving people a diagnosis isn't very descriptive of what I can and cannot actually do.
3. Milk or dark chocolate?
The real answer is any kind of chocolate is fine by me. I have a slight preference for milk.
4. If you could fix one injustice in the world, what would it be?
I wish people could more equitably share in the resources of our planet. People starving while others have goldplated toilets is crazy making.
5. What do you like most about yourself?
I've been told by others that I should say I'm determined, but I prefer stubborn. I'm not exceptionally smart or talented or creative, but I keep trying.
