Grrrrr! I'm not sick, I'm disabled. There's a difference! I know I'm probably over reacting, but grrrr!

There is a difference (and I've not read a.p lately, so I don't know the context), but there's also an overlap and some fuzzy lines. If it gets worse over time at an unpredictable rate, but is mostly not too bad yet, and is not communicable, am I "sick", "disabled", both, or neither? I have no answer, only the question.

Yep it can be fuzzy and there is overlap. I am disabled and I've been ill. This time I'm basically objecting to the notion that disabled = unhealthy.

Ah, that concept I, too, object to.

I'm pretty reactive about the subject myself, so I can't say "you're not overreacting," but I can say I *like* the way you're reacting.

When people say stuff like "I wish you were perfectly healthy" to a person whose body is outside the norm, it feels kind of like they're saying "I wish you didn't exist, you are messing up the way I think things should be."

I wish humans were designed so we couldn't steal and couldn't fight wars. Then we'd REALLY save some money.

I posit that if we were all perfectly healthy, physically and mentally, people would not steal or fight wars.

I've not seen the newsgroup for the last few days, because I am sick. so I can't be sure, but I suspect that someone who is accusing you of overreacting would be in the same situation as someone who called me by a rude name, and was surprised if I yelled at them, because the last 50 people he called that didn't. Well, no, and maybe I didn't yell at the last 49 people who called me that.

Besides, 'perfectly healthy' is a myth, just like 'perfectly abled' is. We all have things we can do and things we're unable to do, the question is more what range of abilities we accommodate.

Which is why universal design makes such good sense!

I've had this post open for weeks, waiting until I had enough time and brain to compose a coherent reply. And I still don't have spoons, so I'm afraid this isn't going to be terribly meaningful. But yes, I get your rant only too well.
